Light theremin experiment #1
I went to Zdonov with the idea to continue to explore light as when I made my “Light harp”.
The light harp was made to “catch” light and make it “multiply” and in that way I used existing light to make
an installation of light.
Just after I arrived we had a week of very clear weather with lots of sunshine pouring through the windows
of the old farm building, so I had a lot of light to work with. I discovered that sunlight was coming up
through the wooden floor in the attic from the room down stairs. I hung up sheets of glass on various places
in the attic to reflect the lines of light from the floor. In daylight these new lines interact with the lines
that already exist in the roof (since the roof is not entirely tight) as well as the ones in the floor.
However, as it was in the end of October and the days grew darker and shorter, I didn’t have much sunlight to
work with in the end. So I had to use electric light to intensify the effect of the reflections in the glass.
It worked perfectly together with the sunlight and you could even enjoy the installation at night time.
And so the title came to me: ‘Light theremin’ – because of the electric light (the title is not entirely without humour).
The ‘Light harp’ was only to be seen in daylight and in that way it had a rather more 'acoustic' aura than
this installation. Further more this installation acts a lot like a visual theremin – without sound:
depending on where you walk and stand within the installation, you will see lines appear and disappear
and so you are able – within the bounderies of the ‘instrument’ to make your own composition. This is still
in an experimental fase, but I hope in future to be able to make more complex and bigger light theremins
with a wider spectre of light – maybe even with colours.
